Leading 6-1 the Northwood Timberwolves yield eight (8) runs to the Beckman Patriots in the 6th inning and suffered their seventh loss in Pacific Coast League (PCL) play. The game ended 9-6 in favor of Beckman.
Northwood Jumps Out to an Early Lead
The Timberwolves scored two runs in the top of the 1st inning on three of its four hits in the game. Darren Shorter led off with a single and Ely Stuart followed with a double. With one out, Tom McCarty drove Shorter in on a single and Thomas Lee drove in Stuart on fielder’s choice.
The Patriots got one run back in the 4th inning. With one out, Connor McGuire singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out, then scored on a passed ball.
Explosive 6th Inning
After a rough first inning, Patriot starter, Justin Goldstein, pitched four scoreless and hitless innings including retiring 11 straight T’wolves in one stretch. In the 6th inning, he lost his control loading the bases on three walks. Justin Graves came in relief. With two outs and a full count Jack Jones smashed a line drive the left fielder dropped and two T’Wolves scored. Scott Feeko then drove in two more with a blazing single making the score 6-1.
In the meantime, Northwood starter, Julian Tristan, had permitted only two hits and one run over the first five innings. After striking out the first batter in the 6th inning, he gave up a walk to Collin Villegas who scored on a double by McGuire, his second hit. Tristan then walked the next batter and hit another before being relieved by Justin Bonnell.
Bonnell was greeted by Ricky Teel’s single, driving in one run and leaving the bases loaded. Mylan Jones hit a sinking line drive double down the left field line scoring two more Patriots. The next batter walked loading the bases again. The Patriots then went on to score four more runs on an error, sacrifice fly and a single.
The Patriot pitchers give up six runs on four hits, five walks, two errors and seven strikeouts while stranding seven Northwood runners on base. Northwood starter, Tristan gave up five runs (4 earned) on three hits, five walks, two hit batters in five and third innings. Bonnell gave up four runs on three hits and one walk.
Northwood is now 5 and 7 in PCL standings and 15 and 8 on the season. These two teams will meet for the third and final time this season at Northwood on Friday May 4th. Game time is 3:30 PM.
