NORTHWOOD LOSES CLOSE GAME TO CORONA DEL MAR 2-0
4/24/2018by Clem

Northwood Varsity lost its fifth Pacific Coast League (PCL) game 2-0 to the Corona Del Mar (CDM) Sea Kings. The Timberwolves are now 5 and 5 in the PCL and 15 and 6 on the season.

Pitchers Duel in 2nd Straight Game

It was a scoreless pitching duel through the first five innings as starting pitchers, Julian Tristan for Northwood and Tommy Wilcox for CDM matched each other. The game broke open in the top of the 6th inning when Sea King’s lead off batter, Chazz Martinez, reached first on an error. Pinch runner, Garin Friedman, stole second base and advanced to third when Luc Stuka got to first on a second error. Friedman scored on a wild pitch/passed ball to give the Sea Kings the lead 1-0. Stuka then scored on a single by Reece Berger.

In the loss, Tristan was superb giving up two unearned runs on three singles while striking out 10, walking one, hitting two batters, and leaving five on base in six innings of work. Arthur Liu finished for Northwood yielding one hit and striking out one.

Sea Kings’ starting pitcher, Wilcox, threw a complete shutout game giving up eight (8) hits, striking out eight (8) and walking one.

Northwood Had 8 Hits but Stranded All 8 Base Runners

The T’Wolves collected 8 hits, but left as many stranded on base. Tristan, Carl Espe, Ely Stuart and Tom McCarty each got two hits including a double by Tristan in the 3rd inning when Northwood ended the inning with the bases loaded. Double plays in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings by the Sea Kings thwarted any comeback by Northwood.

The Timberwolves meet the Sea Kings for the third time playing at Corona Del Mar Friday April 27, 2018 at 3:30 PM. The Sea Kings are 2 and 0 against the T’Wolves.
