Northwood Varsity lost a close one to the University Trojans in a Pacific Coast League (PCL) game, 2 to 1. The Timberwolves are now 5 and 4 in the PCL and 15 and 5 on the season.
Trojan Pitcher Hits Winning Home Run in the 6th inning
With the scored tied 1-1 and two out in the bottom of 6th, University’s starting pitcher, David Schlomovitz, lifted a homer over the right-center field fence for the winning margin.
A 7th inning T’Wolves’ rally fell short. With one out, Ely Stuart got a single and Jack Jones came in as a pinch runner. Darren Shorter then singled. Jones and Shorter advanced to second and third on Julian Tristan’s ground out. With two outs University brought in reliever Brad Hodges. Hodges threw a wild pitch and both Northwood runners were on the move. Unfortunately for Northwood, the wild pitch careened off the backstop right into the catcher’s mitt. In the subsequent rundown, Shorter was tagged out to end the game.
The Two Pitchers Dueled
Ely Stuart opened the game with a solo home run for Northwood. The T’Wolves loaded the bases on two hit batters and single by Tom McCarty before Schlomovitz got out of the jam with two strikeouts. Over the next five innings he gave up a lone single to Carl Espe. In six and two-thirds innings Schlomovitz gave up one (1) run on five (5) hits, six (6) strikeouts, one (1) walk and three (3) hit batters.
T’Wolf pitcher, Ben Berkel had a good outing yielding two (2) runs (1 earned) on four (4) hits, striking out three (3), no (0) walks, and hit one (1) batter. The Trojans first run off Berkel came in the 4th inning. Nick Wetzel drove a double to left field and advanced to third base on the relay throw attempting get him at second. Wetzel scored when the next Trojan batter, Adam Barnett, reached first base on an error.
Northwood did win the three game series against the Trojans with two wins and one loss.
The Timberwolves will host the Corona Del Mar Sea Kings Tuesday April 24, 2018 at 3:30 PM. The Sea Kings beat Northwood in their first meeting 8-2.
