Northwood's baseball team remained within striking distance of Pacific Coast League leader Beckman with an 8-2 victory over University Friday afternoon at Northwood.

But Northwood Coach Rob Stuart insists he wasn't thinking too much about Beckman, a team the Timberwolves meet in a couple of weeks. The Patriots have a one-game lead over second place Northwood.

"I'm worried about Corona del Mar, our next game," Stuart said. "I'm happy with our effort. I'm not happy with our communication and fundamentals. I'm kind of disappointed in the little things."

Northwood (13-6, 7-2) got a solid effort from starting pitcher Brandon Kim. Kim (4-2) pitched the first 5 2/3 innings to notch the victory.

Jack Pabich came on to pitch in the sixth inning to close out the victory, blanking Uni the rest of the way.

"Brandon Kim pitched great and Jack Pabich came in and did a good job," Stuart said.

Northwood also had some offensive punch, collecting 11 hits.

Left fielder Ojo Weiss led the way, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and two RBIs, including a single in the fourth inning which put Northwood ahead, 3-2.

The Timberwolves broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning which included RBI singles by Steevie Feeko and Luke Poirier.

University (8-11-1, 4-5) was led by Kohto Hasegawa and Eric Brunst, who had RBI singles in the fourth inning to help the Trojans tie the game, 2-2.

"That's a good ball club," University Coach Chris Conlin said. "For 12 innings (including Tuesday's game which Northwood won, 2-1) we played them tough this week and they got two wins and they deserved the two wins."
