James Kaprielian came close to another no-hitter Tuesday in a Pacific Coast League game against Northwood at Beckman.
One week after pitching a no-hitter against Woodbridge, Kaprielian allowed just one hit against Northwood, a single by James Clothier with two outs in the fourth inning.
Beckman (16-5, 8-2) pushed across a run in the sixth inning to win, 1-0, and remain atop the PCL.
Kaprielian struck out 11, walked one and hit one batter.
After Clothier's single to left field, Kaprielian retired 10 in a row to finish the game.
"It would have been nice to go back to back no-hitters. (It was) a little drooper fly ball, you got to give it to him, he got the hit," said Kaprielian. "We got the win, which is most important and we're trying to keep our spot in first place in league.
"I felt like I had it, I still had a couple strikeouts, so it worked out."
Northwood pitcher Jake Hoffman was also solid on the mound, scattering four hits.
"He's done that all year long and he really shined today," Northwod Coach Rob Stuart said. "He was pitch for pitch with their guy, Kaprielian was outstanding today, he's great every game, give him a lot of credit but it was fun to see our guy Jacob come out and compete so well against tough competition like that."
Beckman was able to put together two singles, a walk and a hit batter into a run in the sixth inning. Tyler Cook was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, driving in Garret Brown, who had singled.
Then, it was up to Kaprielian to close the deal.
Beckman Coach Kevin Lavalle gave credit to the Timberwolves (9-10, 4-6).
"Northwood always has a plan at the plate and it seems every year we play them, their hitters really know what they're doing but when you face a guy like James, sometimes he's a little too much," Lavalle said.
"He gave up the one hit. He fell behind a lot on the count, but was able to come back and throw strikes. He's got such good stuff that he can throw strikes and not worry about getting hit. But Northwood did a good job laying off his curve ball."
Northwood's best opportunity to score came in the third inning when Luke Poirier was hit by a pitch. Ryan Wong then reached on error but Kaprielian got Ojo Weiss to hit into a double play to end the inning.
"We were trying to win the ball game," Stuart said. "There was no discussion about 'this guy is not going to no-hit us.' We never say that because we're not going out there thinking a guy can no-hit us. We did everything we wanted to do."
The Timberwolves were coming off an 8-6 victory over Corona del Mar on Friday.
"We swung the bats very well," Stuart said. "We had 14 hits and Jack Pabich competed well. Steven Whisler came in to get the save."
Northwood has been playing without first baseman Alex King, who is out with a torn hamstring but is hoping to return by the end of the season.
Beckman was without right fielder Spencer Ludin on Tuesday. Ludin was suspended for the last two games but is expected to rejoin the squad Friday, Lavalle said.
"It's a team thing, Spencer made a mistake and now it's up to him to prove that this baseball team means a lot to him and I know he will," Lavalle said. "He's a good kid and sometimes his strength, which is his aggressiveness and his competitiveness can also be his weakness."
