Jordan Scheftz limited Northwood to four hits and one run over six innings and University went on to defeat Northwood, 10-6, in a Pacific Coast League baseball game Thursday afternoon at University High.
The Trojans (9-5, 4-3) beat the Timberwolves (6-6, 3-4) for the second time this week and remained in third place in league.
After a shaky start Scheftz settled down and was in complete control. He struck out six and walked one.
“I was too anxious and trying to throw too hard at first but I stayed within the plan,” said Scheftz, who helped himself at the plate with two hits, scored two runs, two RBI and a stolen base. “Everything was working pretty good today and the guys jumped out of their slumps.”
Trojans’ coach Chris Conlin was pleased with his team’s results.
“It was the first time all season we put it all together,” said Conlin. “We had good at bats, hit the ball hard and played better defense. It was refreshing.”
The game got off to a wild start as the teams combined for nine runs, eight hits, five walks, two errors, two wild pitches, two botched rundown plays and two umpire overturned calls – all in the first two innings.
Trailing 1-0, University pounded out four hits and scored five times in the first inning to take a 5-1 lead. The key hits in the inning were an RBI triple by Cody Bohlman and a two-run double by Cam Matin.
“I made some adjustments with my hands and swing and it paid off,” said Matin.
Scheftz belted a two-run single in the second as University pushed across three more runs and led, 8-1, after two innings.
Northwood rallied for five runs in the seventh – highlighted by Alex King’s three-run double – but it was too little and too late.
Make Allbee, Bohlman, Ethan Saltzman, Scheftz, and Matin each had two hits for the Trojans.
King had two hits, Ojo Weiss scored two runs and Jake Hoffman had two RBIs for the T’wolves.
“We have guys that are pressing but give Uni credit, they hit the ball hard,” said Northwood coach Rob Stuart.
