No-hitter for Northwood pitcher Steven Whisler
Northwood pitcher Steven Whisler hurled a no-hitter today in the Timberwolves' 7-0 victory over North Hollywood in the second game of the South Bay Classic.
Whisler (4-4) struck out three and faced three batters over the minimum to help Northwood improve to 9-7.
It's the first Northwood no-hitter since Chris Horrell threw one in 2008 against West Valley of Hemet.
"Steven didn't have his best stuff but he was incredibly savvy and seemed to know exactly where to put the ball to get the hitters out," said Coach Rob Stuart via email."
"I'm kind of shocked, but at the same time, I kind of saw it coming," said Whisler by telephone Tuesday.
After warming up, "I knew it was going to be a good game for me," he said.
"In the fourth inning it kind of hit me and I said, 'I can totally do this.' I totally had the confidence to do it."
There were some anxious moments for Whisler in the fifth inning.
With two outs, a North Torrance batter looped a fly ball to left field but Aaron Globerson made a diving catch, providing relief for Whisler.
"That clutch play by Aaron Globerson saved the no-hitter," Whisler said.
Whisler said he threw 90 percent fast balls in the game.
The junior got plenty of support.
"Steven got 13 ground balls today and our defense played really well," Stuart said. "Offensively we really pounded the ball even though the score doesn't reflect it with 16 hits. Alex King smoked the ball several times. It was great to see Michael Tran filling in for an injured Danny Mallek get two big base hits.
"That freshman kid looked pretty good too. Freshman Matt Locklear brother of Northwood starter Kevin had a 4 for 4 day. Kevin added two hits. Justin Gisch swung that bat aggressively adding two hits."
Alex King was 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI; Eric Winslow was 1 for 3 with two RBI on a triple; Tran was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI; Kyle Peterson was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Matt Locklear was 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Kevin Locklear was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
Northwood lost its opener today, 9-1.
"That game was one that we should work hard to forget," Stuart said. "Credit goes to San Pedro for coming ready to play. They were every bit as good as their 15-5 record showed."
