Zack Weiss, the male athlete of the year from Northwood High, has had quite a week.

Weiss was drafted this week in the 10th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. But the talented pitcher, who has received a scholarship to play at UCLA, said he will most likely play for the Bruins next season.

"I didn't expect to get drafted because I had told some teams that I was probably going to go to school," Weiss said after Thursday's Irvine Senior Scholar Awards Banquet. "When I got a phone call saying I went in the 10th round that was pretty cool."

Weiss said he has until Aug.15 to officially decide whether he will accept Pittsburgh's offer.

"Nothing final, but I'm leaning toward school," Weiss said.

Friday night, Weiss came on in relief for the Sea View League in the Ryan Lemmon Showcase game against the Empire League and struck out the side in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Sea View League lost to the Empire League, 10-3, but it was quite a performance by Weiss.

Kyle Purzycki of Northwood had a single for the Sea View League.

Weiss landed with a solid program. UCLA is competing against Cal State Fullerton in the NCAA Super Regionals this weekend.

Weiss is expected to head to UCLA Saturday to watch the Bruins in the second game of the series.

The rest of the Irvine teams will be involved in Saturday's showcase games at Ryan Lemmon Stadium.
