Remembering Paul Wagner
6/8/2010by Rob Stuart, Head Coach, NHS Baseball

For those of you who didn't know Paul Wagner here are some of my thoughts and memories of this wonderful young man.

Paul played for us from 2005-2008. He was an outstanding catcher that really knew how to think the game. Paul was a very hard worker who played the toughest position on the field and made it look easy. He was years beyond his age when it came to understanding the process of calling pitches, controlling the pace of the game and helping pitchers get better. Paul was one the brightest and most instinctual players that I have coached.  He was a great leader for our teams at Northwood and everybody looked to Paul for guidance and support. Having Paul on your team was like having an extra coach. When he was on the field it was really easy to sit back and watch and allow him to guide the team. He made coaching very enjoyable.

Paul was a very genuine and caring individual who had a very quick and witty personality. He also knew people and cared about how people felt. He was a very charismatic and well liked student at Northwood. Paul was a natural leader, not afraid of a challenge and always willing to go first, and dedicate himself to a cause.

Paul Wagner was everything great about high school sports. He was an excellent student, a great teammate, an outstanding player and a class act.

I will always remember Paul shaking hands after every game, he always went out of his way to congratulate the opposition with praise and sincerity. It wasn't just walk down a line and slaps hands. He understood the meaning of each game and the intent in which it was supposed to be played.

In 2008 he was the  heart of our team. We were coming off a difficult season and the fact that we were to turn the year around and double our win total was credit to his leadership both on and off the field. That season there was no doubt that it was his team and he led by example.

Paul Wagner will be truly missed by all of those lucky enough to been a part of his life.

My sincere condolences go out to Don, Megan, Kate and Stephanie Wagner.
